Polar Bears In Danger
Jan 23 2008 Filed under Bears, Biology, Ecology
This is my first article for our new science blog, and my first ever blog posting. I talked and mom typed. I am six years old.
This is what I learned about Polar Bears today. I am learning about the word extinct and what it means.
Polar bears eat meat. In 40 years the ice cube is going to melt and the polar bears home is going to collapse. The snow is getting really, really, really squishy. The polars bears are going to sink into the water and they might die. But polar bears are really, really, really, really good swimmers. They eat fish.

Don’t you worry, darling. Whoever, or whatever, created the universe was a lot smarter than to let all the polar bears fall into the ocean. What’s really endangered are “deep thinkers.”
Global warming is a really appealing concept to people who have a lot of time on their hands. They really are nice people who really mean very well and they are not wrong that the earth is getting warmer but when you make a REAL, SINCERE effort to study as much of the surrounding facts as possible, you will find so many competing theories - many of which are very, very intelligent.
Here’s one… you can skip to the part where it says, Bear Population Steady
Here, have a look at this major newspaper’s story about a well-known deep thinker’s book on the matter. He doesn’t deny that there is global warming or that humans have contributed to it but his special talent is in putting such things in perspective rather than going crazy and worrying about the world coming to an end and imagining all the polar bears are going to fall through the ice and drown.
Here’s another great article about a guy who did a TV series on Polar bears and even came really close to getting attacked!
When I was 6 years old, I was cute and smart in a kid way but I was too young to fully understand the ways of the world. If I’d heard Polar bears were dying, I’d probably have felt bad especially since my first knowledge of them was cute, little fluffy teddy bears but now that I’m older and I’ve been taught how to go beyond my initial feelings and to research and read and think for myself, I find that there is so much evidence that says the Polar bears are not in danger of dying from global warming.
And that the one thing we CAN do immediately to help Polar bears is to regulate hunting more closely. The last time they did that, the Polar Bears increased by 5,000 bears in the following 10-20 years.
Anyways, thank you for having your mommy write this article for you. It made me think about this very important topic all over again. I almost forgot!
Thanks!

Sam,
Thank you for contributing to McKayla’s education, and pointing her to additional sources of information. Her report came after watching a video on polar bears and was her first exposure to the fact that man can help animals that are could be in danger of extinction. She’ll be reporting her additional findings here on this blog.
This teacher, mom, has her own beliefs that more closely match those of Bjorn Lomborg which she will naturally be exposed to. And has the belief that while man has contributed to global warming, it is also part of the natural cycle of things. It is my hope is to turn her into a “deep thinker” which we agree there are certainly not enough of. In fact, that one topic drives my fifteen year old son nuts. He wonders how come so many kids his age can be such shallow thinkers. But that is a topic for another blog.
Mikster,
Thanks for the welcome.
